Paying Attention to Our Non-Verbal Communications

What we do NOT say can actually be more powerful than what is spoken. To deliver effective communications, our body language should be congruent with what we are saying.

Active listening plays a role too.  When someone is speaking, maintain good eye contact, avoid negative signals such as crossed arms, and nod approvingly that you are understanding their message. Leaning slightly forward indicates are really in a zone with the conversation. A sincere smile will put people at ease and can brighten up your eyes.

I recommend that when you meet someone, begin with a firm handshake, a smile, and good eye contact. Keep the spotlight on them with good listening and attentiveness. Ask permission to take a few notes, it will not only say to them that you really care, but will also help you with later in planning your next step activities.

There is little doubt that communication is essential. Non-Verbal communications can confirm your messages or question the authenticity of them. Our ability to convey our messages well can contribute to our success and help build key relationships.
